Bishop Alastair responds to Sexual Violence in Conflict Report
The Bishop of Derby, The Rt Revd Dr Alastair Redfern has responded to the House of Lords 2015-16 session report titled ‘Sexual Violence in Conflict: A War Crime’.
The House of Lords Select Committee on Sexual Violence in Conflict launched their Report for the 2015-16 session. The report suggests a number of recommendations and calls for the government to continue its work on PSVI (The Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative).
During 2016 the UK, working in partnership with Non-Government Organisations (NGOs) and other governments, will further build on the extensive progress made to date. This will include challenging harmful attitudes, working to end stigma suffered by many survivors, delivering justice, better access to healthcare and psychosocial support and furthering military training on prevention and response times.
Speaking after the launch of the report Bishop Alastair said, “It has been a privilege to serve on this important Select Committee in the House of Lords. Sexual violence in conflict is a horrific crime which does enormous damage to individuals, families, communities and cultures. It has been harrowing to meet some of the victims and to learn about issues of trauma, stigma and exclusion from normal life. The report makes practical suggestions for our government and for many other agencies to recognise the enormity of this crime and to begin appropriate steps to challenge the perpetrators and reach out to the victims. The Churches have a key role to play in situations of conflict in this whole area.”
