Seeing Firsthand

Travel all the way to Peru... and meet someone from Chresterfield

Therapy for disabled children and a women's sewing cooperative in Peru were two of the inspiring projects visited by the Bishop of Derby of his first visit to the South American country.

In his role as Vice Chair of the Anglican Alliance, Bishop Alastair Redfern was invited to see firsthand the work being carried out by The Anglican Alliance in Peru.

He said: “I was able to visit some examples, one of which included a project to offer therapy to disabled children. When ministry was first offered in this area, it was discovered that children born with mental or physical problems were simply tied up in a chair all day to allow other members of the family to concentrate upon making a living. Now an impressive clinic is offering a range of therapies and support for parents and families. I was privileged to meet six year old Nicole, born with severe physical disabilities, but now building up muscles and mobility, and on the verge of being able to walk.”

Bishop Alastair was also impressed with the commitment of the Anglican church to grow congregations in the most needy areas.

He also met two key people in the church with strong connections to Chesterfield. Paul Tester works for the Church Mission Society and has links with St Thomas Church, Brampton, and has welcomed several groups from Derbyshire. He acted as interpreter for the meeting with the new Bishop of Peru.

The second person was actually born in Chesterfield. Rachel Hill told the Bishop she had felt a call to be a missionary at the age of eight, while living in Chesterfield. She and her husband now enable learning for Christian discipleship and ministry with all age groups across the Diocese of Peru.

The Anglican Alliance brings together the Provinces of the Anglican Church from across the world to work together for development, relief in emergencies and advocacy for the poor.
