Gardening Time

Children learning to grow veg

Last autumn, Promises Nursery in Chesterfield had help from the National Citizenship Service to clear out their planned allotment.

Now, the children at this centre run by Christian charity Valley CIDS is reaping the rewards, with all sorts of vegetables growing.
Enlisting the help of a parent who is a gardener by trade to advise and help, the garden gang prepared pots and containers and planted carrots, potatoes, tomatoes and flowers. The children have had a great time discussing growth, measuring the sunflowers, discovering mini-beasts and observing weather. Each day the children have been keeping an eye on the progress, watering the plants and taking photos.

Nursery manager Jackie Rhodes said, “We are eager to try the fruits of our labour and hoping that the children can prepare the produce as well as taste it. We have been so excited to learn where our foods come from, how it grows, how to care for living things and even more excited that we have grown herbs to accompany our produce.”
